COMPOSTING

At KEEPER Denim, we recently published a blog article on the Difference Between Biodegradable and Compostable - highlighting the positive and negatives of each. Today we are diving into composting and the incredible benefits that it has for our planet.

WHAT IS COMPOSTING?

Composting is the natural process of recycling organic materials including food scraps and leaves, into new soil/fertiliser that you can then put onto your garden. Anything that grows naturally will eventually decompose, however the process of composting speeds this up.

HOW TO COMPOST

A compost bin is comprised of layers, including brown material (dead leaves, sticks and paper) and green materials (garden clippings and food scraps). These layers must be moist, but not too wet and the bin must have a lid to retain both heat and moisture inside and aired every week or two. Then after a couple of months, you will have new soil in your compost that you can then put into your garden!

INDOOR COMPOST BINS

You might be thinking I don’t have room in my backyard to have a big compost bin - don’t worry, we've got you! With the availability of indoor compost bins today, there are so many to choose from. So no matter if you live in a house or an apartment, you can still compost and look after the environment. Checkout KEEPER Denim’s top 5 indoor compost bins below:

1. UNCOMMON GOODS - LIVING COMPOSTER

This compost bin by Uncommon Goods is made from sustainable materials including cork and recycled plastic and is odourless. It also has separate compartments where you can add food scraps, worms and remove the compost soil.

2. URBALIVE - INDOOR VERMICOMPOSTING BIN

This odor free compost bin by Urbalive includes tiered trays where the worms can convert scraps into compost soil that you can then collect and put into your garden!

3. BOKASHI - INDOOR COMPOST BINS

This compost bin by Bokashi is different as it converts all food scraps that can't be fed directly to worms, including - meat, bones, fish, citrus and onion; into more easily consumed worm food which you can then remove and put into a traditional compost bin.

4. URBAN COMPOSTER - BUCKET INDOOR COMPOST BIN

This bin by Urban Composter is somewhere between a collection bucket and a composter. Similar to the Bokashi bin above, it creates an environment without oxygen to ferment food that can't be fed directly to worms. This produces a liquid fertiliser which can be collected and used as top soil in your garden, slowly releasing nutrients to your plants.

5. VITAMIX - FOODCYCLER

The Foodcycler by Vitamix reduced food waste to approx. a tenth of its’ original size over a period of 7-8 hours. It can do this with a wide variety of food waste including fruit, vegetables, dairy and bones. You can then place these food scraps into a conventional compost bin to fully decompose into soil.
